Maidendale Waltzing Matilda with a RDA rider in her first AB dressage competition
Wooden Spoon, the Children's charity of Rugby, and Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) have launched a new charity initiative to support disabled children and young people across the UK.
In preparation for RDA's 50th anniversary in 2019, Wooden Spoon have pledged to help RDA fund a team of horses across the country.
RDA is experiencing a growing demand for services amongst older children and needs to increase the number of bigger horses at its centres across the UK. Wooden Spoon aims to help fill this gap and are particularly keen to see British Native breeds fill this need.
Being the 'Great All Rounders' Dales Ponies are particularly suited to work with RDA. They are sure-footed and good natured, so can used for therapy sessions, while being active enough to compete in other RDA disciplines - dressage, show jumping, vaulting, endurance and carriage driving.

Members may recall Dales in RDA making the news, such as Hillsboro Crispin who was used by the Russian team in the Special Olympics a few years ago.
RDA Groups are looking for ponies who are at least 5 years old, quiet natured, willing, active and well schooled. Many Groups prefer geldings to make management easier. If you think you have a pony for sale who would be suitable, make contact with Groups near you to see whether they are applying for this support. To find your nearest Group, go to http://www.rda.org.uk/, click on 'find a group', then enter your postcode.
The pony in the photos is Maidendale Waltzing Matilda who works with the Bingley Group. She regularly competes in both RDA and able bodied competitions in showing, dressage and show jumping as well as being used in riding lessons for those able to progress and therapy sessions for riders who need physical therapy - truly a Great All Rounder!
